My Story

Quite a while ago, my Language Arts class did a project called My Story which is supposed to talk about a story within your family. I talked about my Great Grandpa in the holocaust.

  • Where did you first hear it?

When I was about 9 years old my parents told me about my great grandpa but I don’t think I was old enough to really comprehend it then.

  • Who told it?

My parents first told me it but it turns out they did not know the full story and my grandpa did.

  • Why is it important to you?

Because I find it very interesting that something that big and serious happened in my family.

  • How did the story make you feel?

It made me feel relieved that he was so lucky to be in the position that he was in but also I felt bad for others who were not as lucky as my great grandpa.

  • What makes the story special or important?

It is special to me because a lot of people in my family talk about him and it is something very significant in my family

Born in what was Poland then and Minsk, Belarus now, Irving Parker was born to a poor family. Growing, up he had a relatively rough childhood but not much is known about his early childhood. Once he grew up, he was starting to study to be a pharmacist before the war and had a wife and kids who were later killed right in front of him during the Nazi invasion.  When the war started out,the Russian and German armies invaded Poland,  and he was taken over by the Russian army and was under Russian occupation for a while. But after the Germans attacked Russia and occupied all of Poland, his land was taken by the German Wehrmacht. Once his land was taken over by Germany, he was immediately taken to a couple different concentration camps and then ended up at Auschwitz. While at Auschwitz, the German SS were looking for a pharmacist who could read many different languages because the German army needed the medicine to be translated that the prisoners brought in. According to my grandpa, if he could not transcribe the medicine, they probably would have killed him shortly after he arrived at the camp.  After the war, his concentration camp was liberated by the Russians and shortly after learned that his whole family was dead. After he was liberated, he was shipped with other survivors to the a camp where his objective was to regain his health after being only 109 pounds after Auschwitz. After the rehab camp, he was shipped to the United States along with others where he worked for a pharmacy distribution business and kept that job the remainder of his life where he had a family with a daughter (my great aunt).

Side story: According to my grandpa, after the war he would go out and look for former Nazis while riding in a sidecar of a motorcycle while he gunned the Nazis down with a machine gun.

Perfect Planet Photos and Creation

As you know, my language arts class recently did a perfect planet project. If you do not know about that project, please scroll down and read about it for some context. Anyways, during the creation project, we had a local artist called Mrs. Gignoux come into the class to help with creation. This was a very fun experience when we turned our posters into books with the help of a professional artist. We used plants, ink, paper, and glue in our creation process.

Monkey’s Paw Performance

A couple weeks ago, Durham Academy had a group of professional performers come to the school and put on a couple of performances. My favorite, the monkey’s paw was very interesting and the acting was top notch. I have loved this story and when I heard it was going to be performed, I was very exited. The actors really made the story clear and made it suspenseful. I think almost the entire school enjoyed this, but especially me. The Monkey’s paw is a story about a small token that is used for wishes, but brings despair after the wish is granted. In this story, the father asks for 50 pounds (money). But before he receives the money, his son dies while working in a factory.https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:The_Monkey%27s_Paw

Stock Market Project

It’s been a while since I have published something on this account but in my class recently, we have started a project where you “invest” in certain stocks. You’d then update the numbers per share every day and see if you would be up or down. And then, at the end of the year, you would see who was up the most. I invested in: Delta Airlines, Lululemon, Berkshire Hathaway (B), Microsoft Corp, Moderna, and Coinbase. My class is playing this game because of a book we are reading, the Westing Game, and a character called Turtle, who loves investing and the stock market. I chose my companies based on two reasons. One being, my dad giving me some advice on Moderna and Coinbase, and another reason being the popularity of the companies in my class and in the grade like Lululemon. In the long run, I predict they will all do decently well especially Lululemon and Microsoft. I made the spreadsheet with another teacher who guided us by telling us which formula’s to put in the places so that it would automatically do calculations for you. All credits: Me

Astronaut at DA

A couple weeks ago, at Durham Academy, an astronaut by their name of Colonel Virts came to share his story. He talked about his early childhood to the time that he was in space, and it was very interesting. During his visit, I learned that the astronaut’s life really isn’t that much different than mine, even in space. He talked about his time in the air force and what he did while he was in space and it was probably one of the most interesting speeches that I have heard. He has written a book about space called “An Astronauts Guide to Leaving the Planet”.

UFC 290 is STACKED

https://www.tapology.com/fightcenter/events/98868-ufc-290

I am so exited for UFC 288 but more importantly, exited for UFC 290. There is so much talent in 290 and some great matchups especially for the main and lightweight event. In the main event, you will have Alexander Volkanovski (#2 pound for pound fighter also UFC Featherweight Champion) take on Yair Rodriguez. And for the lightweight event, you will have Jalin Turner take on Dan Hooker. Like I said, I am very exited for 290 but in the near future, there in UFC Fightnight coming up so I will have a couple of my friends over to watch.

Jake Paul vs Tommy Fury

  • Recently, Tommy Fury and Jake Paul had a fight (boxing) in Saudi Arabia. This fight was long anticipated and called “The fight of the decade” for some. For me, this was a very good fight as Tommy fury started out very strong with good hits to Jake Paul in the early rounds, although things did not go well for Tommy in the late rounds as Jake knocked him down once and landed very good punches on him with Jake’s strong right overhand punch. This fight was very close and an amazing fight all around but Tommy Fury won the fight with Split Decision. Personally, I was rooting for Jake Paul. Many people think of Jake Paul as just a “YouTuber” in his early days but in my eyes, he is a very hard working, diligent fighter as he beat Anderson Silva, the GOAT of UFC Welterweight division. He works very hard and was very focused for this fight, but like I said, fell short. Some Special guests at this fight included the GOAT of football, Cristiano Ronaldo and the GOAT of boxing, Mike Tyson.

What can you do in Durham? (Spanish)

Hola! Yo soy Beck Rudolph y tengo 11 años.

Follow up on “Upcoming UFC Fight”

In the UFC fight on February 11, Islam beat Alexander Volkanovski by unanimous decision after round 5. This was a very big fight for me like I said in my last blog post about this fight. During the fight, Volkanovski had 1 knockdown and Islam had 0. The fight was held at the RAC Arena at 10:00PM EST during UFC 284.

Our Trip to NC museum of natural sciences

On Friday, my grade went to the North Carolina museum of natural sciences. The museum was located in Raleigh, North Carolina. We traveled by bus for about 40 minutes. In my opinion, the experience was mediocre. It had some interesting aspects, but most of it was not getting the information across well. They were not very clear about which floor was related to what, it was very unorganized and miscellaneous. I think the reason why my grade decided to go there was for reasons such as our classes that we have during regular school would relate to this museum, such as science or history class. My favorite exhibit would probably be the meteorite because it was cool to see a real meteorite that had fallen to space in our state.
